In 1966, the Municipal Auditorium was remodeled and renamed the Civic Center Music Hall. The first performance, “Rhapsodic Rhythms” took place on October 4, 1937. The Municipal Auditorium was completed in April 1937. Bellows Construction became the primary contractor for the Municipal Auditorium and began on-site excavation on time. In August 1935, the Roosevelt Administration announced that all PWA project had to break ground by December 1935 or risk losing federal support. The original design features a 6-story building with both neoclassical and Art Deco features that seated 6,200 in the main hall and smaller theatre that seated 400. Parr began planning and designing the Municipal Auditorium budgeted at $1.25 million. Roosevelt's New Deal programs in the 1930s contributed to 55 percent of the cost of building what would become the Civic Center Music Hall through the Public Works Administration. I really want to keep the seating, but update the padding/upholstry. It's not as though there are many options in town for those.especially now that Stage Center is dead as well. It has pretty good acoustics and could be a very good drama theater. If they had someone to promote the thing, maybe we could attract some dollars to its use and renovation. It's not ever advertised as a venue and the events in it aren't either. I actually didn't even know it existed until I went to that play though either. I remember sitting there thinking, man this room is a dump. I was Romeo and Juliet in that about 8 years ago by the OKC Theater Company. I always assumed that the whole thing was being renovated.and never understood why they didnt do the reamaining areas like Freede Little Theater.
